How to use a pcd turning inserts

PCD turning inserts are highly reliable, resilient cutting tools, designed to bear the processing of even the hardest and most abrasive substances. These capable tools consist of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) material, synthesized from extreme heat and pressure conditions. Not even metals, plastics, or composites can stand up to the power of PCD turning inserts.

PCD turning inserts are commonly used for a variety of tasks, primarily in a lathe. The insert is secured in position with a tool holder, to be then placed into the machine’s mechanisms. This option is far more common than using an insert in a miller, although this method is still possible.

By rotating the insert at high speeds, it can be used to penetrate the material that is to be machined. As the material is pushed further through, the sophisticated cutting edge of the insert will eliminate the particles that are no longer needed. PCD inserts prove to be especially effective when machining threads, with their specialised design allowing for a seamless process.

PCD inserts offer an impressive range of possibility for machining, but should be handled with caution. The considerable hardness and abrasiveness of these inserts renders them liable to wear quickly in the face of soft materials. Further, due to their sensitivity to heat, PCD inserts must be regularly cooled while in use to avoid irreparable harm.

When machining hard and abrasive materials, PCD inserts are undoubtedly the way to go. However, they bear the same characteristics as the materials they are used to treat, meaning they could deteriorate fairly quickly if you use them on softer substances. Making sure they remain cool during the process helps avert any possible harm that could arise as a consequence.
